Hackney Carriage Tariff — Explained
Every licensed taxi in Harrogate charges according to a fare schedule published by North Yorkshire Council. This is why Harrogate Taxi can offer fixed prices — the tariff removes discretion from the driver and gives passengers certainty before they travel.
The three tariffs
Tariff 1
Standard day rate
Starting fare
£4.00
Mon–Sat · 6am–10pm
The rate that applies to the majority of airport transfers. Morning departures, afternoon pickups — Tariff 1 is the baseline.
Tariff 2
Night & Sunday rate
Starting fare
~£5.40
Mon–Sat 10pm–6am · All day Sunday
Applies to early morning departures (4–6am), late night arrivals, and any journey on a Sunday. Approximately 35% above Tariff 1.
Tariff 3
Bank holiday rate
Starting fare
~£7.20
All UK bank holidays
The maximum rate, applicable on all public bank holidays. We always clearly state the applicable tariff at the time of booking.
How the fixed fare is calculated
For journeys beyond the Harrogate area (such as airport transfers), the fare is calculated using the tariff meter rate for the applicable time period multiplied by the distance. Rather than running a meter during the journey, we calculate the fare in advance based on the known distance and present you with a fixed quote at booking.
The quoted price cannot legally exceed what the council tariff would produce. Because we calculate it in advance, you always know the exact fare before you travel — not after you arrive.
Why the tariff matters for passengers
Legal maximum — not a target
The tariff sets the maximum a licensed taxi can charge. In practice, licensed drivers charge the tariff rate, which means you always know the ceiling.
Reviewed annually by the council
North Yorkshire Council reviews the tariff each year in consultation with the trade and the public. Any changes must be publicly advertised and take effect on a fixed date.
Applies to hackney carriages only
The council tariff applies specifically to hackney carriage (plated) taxis. Private hire vehicles (PHV/minicabs) are not governed by the same tariff — their prices are set by the operator.
Your right to see it
Every licensed hackney carriage must display the tariff schedule inside the vehicle. If it is not visible, you are entitled to ask the driver to show it to you before the journey begins.
