How are Harrogate
taxi prices calculated?

Every licensed taxi in Harrogate charges according to a schedule published by North Yorkshire Council. The maths is straightforward — and because we calculate it in advance, you always know the exact fare before you travel.

The formula

Fare = Starting charge + (Distance × per-mile rate) × Tariff multiplier

The starting charge and per-mile rate are fixed by North Yorkshire Council. The tariff multiplier depends on whether you travel in the day (×1.0), at night/Sunday (~×1.35), or on a bank holiday (~×1.80).

How we produce a fixed fare

1

Distance is measured

The route from your address to the airport terminal is mapped using the standard road distance. For Harrogate to Leeds Bradford Airport this is approximately 17 miles via the A658.

2

Tariff is applied

The applicable tariff (1, 2, or 3) is determined by your departure or pickup time. The council tariff specifies a starting charge and a per-mile rate for each tariff band.

3

Fixed fare is calculated

The starting charge plus the distance-based rate gives the total fare. For pre-booked transfers, this number is fixed at booking — the same result the meter would give at journey end.

4

You see it before you travel

The fixed fare is shown in your booking confirmation. No meter runs during the journey. If your flight is delayed, your fare does not change.

Why fixed fares are better than running a meter

You know the price before you leave

With a metered taxi, the final fare depends on traffic, diversions, and how long lights are red. With a fixed pre-booked fare, you know the exact amount before your journey starts.

The price doesn't change if your flight is delayed

If your inbound flight is delayed, we adjust the pickup time automatically. The fare you were quoted remains the same — we absorb any additional waiting.

No rounding up or discretionary additions

The fixed fare is derived directly from the tariff calculation. There is no tip expectation built in and no 'admin fee' added.

It's still regulated by the council

Pre-booked fixed fares for licensed hackney carriages cannot legally exceed the tariff rate. Our fixed fares are not a commercial override — they are the tariff, calculated in advance.

Frequently asked questions

How are Harrogate taxi prices calculated?
Using the North Yorkshire Council hackney carriage tariff — a starting charge plus a per-mile rate for the applicable tariff band (day, night, or bank holiday). For pre-booked airport transfers, we calculate this from the known distance and lock in the price at booking.
Why is an evening taxi from Harrogate more expensive?
Tariff 2 applies between 10pm and 6am, and all day Sunday. It is approximately 35% above Tariff 1. This is a legal requirement, not a discretionary surcharge.
Can a Harrogate taxi charge whatever it wants?
No. Licensed hackney carriages cannot legally exceed the council tariff. If you believe you have been overcharged, you can report it to North Yorkshire Council's licensing team.
Why does Harrogate Taxi quote a fixed price rather than run a meter?
For airport transfers, we calculate the tariff fare in advance from the known distance and present the result as a fixed quote. This produces exactly what the meter would show — but you see it before you travel, not after you arrive.

No surprises. No meter.
