Frequently asked questions

What is the Harrogate taxi night rate?
The Harrogate taxi night rate is Tariff 2, set by North Yorkshire Council. It applies from 10pm to 6am Monday to Saturday, and all day Sunday. It is approximately 50% higher than the Tariff 1 day rate.
What time does the night rate start in Harrogate?
Tariff 2 (night rate) starts at 10pm and ends at 6am. The taximeter automatically switches tariff — drivers cannot override this.
Does the night rate apply on Sundays?
Yes. Tariff 2 applies all day on Sundays, regardless of the time. A Sunday 10am airport run is charged at the same rate as a 2am run.
When does Tariff 3 (bank holiday rate) apply?
Tariff 3 applies on all public bank holidays in England and Wales: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and May Day bank holidays. On these days the rate is approximately 60% above Tariff 1.
Do all Harrogate taxis use the same rates?
All licensed hackney carriage taxis in Harrogate must use the North Yorkshire Council tariff schedule. Drivers cannot charge more or less than the metered tariff — if they do, they risk losing their licence. Our published fixed prices are pre-calculated from these tariffs.
If I book a night-rate journey in advance, is the price fixed?
Yes. When you pre-book with us, we quote your fare based on the applicable tariff for your departure time — Tariff 1 for day trips, Tariff 2 for night/Sunday, Tariff 3 for bank holidays. The price you see at booking is the price you pay, even if you call the night before.
Does the night rate apply if my journey starts at 9pm but ends after 10pm?
The tariff is based on when the journey starts. If the meter starts at 9:45pm (Tariff 1), that tariff applies for the entire journey even if it runs past 10pm. For pre-booked fixed fares, we apply the tariff that is active at your pickup time.
Is the night rate the same as surge pricing?
No. Surge pricing (used by apps like Uber) can be 2–3× the base rate depending on demand and changes dynamically. The Harrogate taxi night rate is a fixed council tariff — predictable, regulated, and the same for every licensed driver.
